It’s off to green meadows with a touch of madness in this concert, with the aria “Verdi prati” from Handel’s opera Alcina forming the basis for the first piece. In the aria, the knight Ruggiero realises that the sorceress Alcina’s verdant isle is actually a desert populated by monsters and that for this reason he must leave, even though he admits that both she and her island’s beauty will haunt him for the rest of his life. The Spanish term “La Folía” (or madness) meanwhile, refers to one of the oldest documented European musical themes on record, and many composers have made use of it, not least Vivaldi in his opus 1 no. 12, written in 1705. As for Salieri’s variations on the original theme, it’s worthy of note that the work is one of very few sets of successful orchestral variations written before the late Romantic period.G. Fr. The Municipality of Athienou, and the Kallinikeio Municipal Museum of Athienou, are currently holding an exhibition “Seven Stories. Lace and Modern Art” until June 2017, which celebrates Athienou’s unique lace crafts and their status as ‘intangible heritage’.Described as “seven works of modern art listen to seven testimonials on Venis and Athienou needle lace”, the exhibition revolves around oral testimonies of the history of lace making in the large village community, which have then been interpreted into modern art by various participating artists.
The lace techniques of ‘Venis’ lace (‘Pittotes’) and Athienou lace (‘Oloplouma’) differ from Lefkara lace linens (‘Lefkaritika’) in their designs, whilst Oloplouma are made entirely out of lace without linen cloth. The lace is included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Cyprus Register, which confirms its traditional significance.
The purpose of the exhibition is to fill the gap in the written account of this tradition; to revitalise the memories of the village during this era, and to introduce the younger generation to this significant piece of the village’s history, which is not widely known.
The artists are: Anastasia Lambaski Onisiforou, Irini Klokkari, Elena Tsigaridou and Sandy Antoniou, Natalie Pehlivani, Christiana Pougerasi, Chrysostomos Iosifides and Chrysostomos Kitas.
Their artistic disciplines vary from jewellery design, fashion and ceramics, to painting, interior and graphic design.
The exhibition is open: Monday – Friday, 8am – 3pm (except public holidays), and with prior notice on weekends.

It was a visit to Scotland in 1829 that inspired Mendelssohn to write two of his most important works: the Hebrides Overture and the “Scottish” symphony, with the former portraying the Isle of Staffa with its gaping, sea cave. As for his Scottish symphony, and after visiting the rugged ruins of Holyrood Castle, Mendelssohn wrote in his diary that “We went to the Palace of Holyrood, where Queen Mary lived and loved... Everything around is broken and moldering, and the bright sky shines in. I believe I found today in the old chapel the beginning of my Scottish symphony.” Sandwiched between these two works is Weber’s Clarinet concerto no. 2, written in 1811, with the composer making breathtakingly difficult demands on the soloist but also showcasing his own opulent orchestral writing.F. MENDELSSOHN: Hebrides overture, op. 26

Following the great success of the concert cycle "Beethoven: The complete works for violin and piano", the distinguished Cypriot pianist Dr Nicolas Constantinou continues presenting works of L. v. Beethoven with a series of two concerts featuring the integrated work for cello and piano with renowned cellist and first cello at the famous Vienna Philharmonic Péter Somodari. The composition of sonatas for piano and cello was unthinkable before Beethoven; up until then, the cello would mainly provide the bass line. Beethoven was the first composer to tackle these challenges (his example was not followed until 1824).
The works for piano and cello (three sets variations and five sonatas) are representative of the three periods of Beethoven’s artistic creation: the 'classical', the 'heroic' and the 'late’. Inspired by the unmatched capabilities of various renowned cellists and his own abilities as a virtuoso pianist, the sonatas not only represented an example par excellence for the subsequent generation of composers, but at the same time, they pose tremendous challenges for cellists and pianists alike.
Péter Somodari Hungarian Péter Somodari began playing the cello at the age of three. Between 1997 and 2006 he studied at the music academies of Budapest and Saarbrücken, receiving important impulses from L? szlo Mezö, Miklos Perényi, Gustav Rivinius, and György Kurt? g. He holds numerous awards, among which the first prize at the 2005 International Music Competition in Marktneukirchen. He has appeared in performance with such renowned musicians as Christian Tetzlaff, Patricia Kopatschinskaja, Tabea Zimmermann, Boris Pergamenschikov, and Marta Gulyas. From 1997 to 2001 Péter Somodari collaborated with the Budapest Strings, both as their section’s cellist as well as appearing as a soloist. In the period to follow he was member of the Keller Quartet and member of the Hungarian State Opera.
From 2004 he had served as the solo cellist of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, and since September 2012 he is the solo cellist of the Vienna State Opera House and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Nicolas Costantinou Dr Nicolas Costantinou has given numerous concerts in Austria, Cyprus, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Portugal, Turkey, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA and regularly appears in prestigious halls such as Wigmore Hall, the Brahms Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, and the grand Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He is regularly invited to perform at international festivals around Europe such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the Oulunsalo Soi Music Festival (Finland), the Gödöllő Chamber Music Festival (Hungary), and the International Kypria Festival (Cyprus). His debut in London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall was received with favourable reviews.
He has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg, the Budapest Concert Orchestra, the Failoni Chamber Orchestra, and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, with maestros such as Konrad von Abel, Juri Gilbo, Esa Heikkilä, Notis Georgiou, Spiros Pisinos, Maciej Zoltowski, and Ayis Ioannides. In the field of chamber music, he has performed with Gustav Rivinius, Erkki Rautio, David Cohen, Péter Somodari, Vilmos Szabadi, Tytus Miecznikowski, Gábor Varga, Francesco Quaranta, Wolfgang Schroeder, Margarita Elia, Kyros Patsalides, Chloë Hanslip, Kazuhiro Tagaki, and the Meta4 and Akadémia String quartets. He regularly performs works by Cypriot composers in Cyprus and abroad including a number of world premieres. Dr Costantinou has recently performed for the first time in Cyprus Beethoven’s complete works for piano and violin with violinist Nikos Pittas.

A particular, individual style can also be found in the works of British composer Alex Rawsthorne (1905-1971) whose Theme and variations for two violins was first heard at the International Contemporary Music Festival in London in 1938 and which instantly placed the composer on the board. As regards our entirely contemporary Russian composer Igor Frolov (born in 1939) he never studied composition, while was, at one time, known worldwide as a virtuoso violinist. He started writing on the suggestion of David Oistrakh, with his profound knowledge of the violin from a performer’s point of view always assuring the best possible result.

Karagiozis goes to a concert Cyprus Cyprus
An exciting performance, both instructive and amuzing for children and grown-ups alike...
An exciting performance, both instructive and amuzing for children and grown-ups alike. Nionios (Mr. Dionysios), an ardent music lover, tries to convince Karagiozis to attend a classical music concert, organized by Vizier’s daughter. Karagiozis refuses to do so until Veligegas orders that everyone should attend the concert: Karagiozis, Barbayiorgos, Stavrakas, Hadjiavatis and all the other Shadow Theatre characters. During the concert, Karagiozis has many questions (about the instruments, the music, the composer and other things). Nionios patiently explains everything in simple terms, wishing to initiate him into the world of classical music. Gradually, Karagiozis completely changes his view about this music, which he previously thought to be difficult and heavy! Now he loves it!Idea, story design, selection and orchestration of music works: Alkis Baltas
