The Municipality of Athienou, and the Kallinikeio Municipal Museum of Athienou, are currently holding an exhibition “Seven Stories. Lace and Modern Art” until June 2017, which celebrates Athienou’s unique lace crafts and their status as ‘intangible heritage’.Described as “seven works of modern art listen to seven testimonials on Venis and Athienou needle lace”, the exhibition revolves around oral testimonies of the history of lace making in the large village community, which have then been interpreted into modern art by various participating artists.
The lace techniques of ‘Venis’ lace (‘Pittotes’) and Athienou lace (‘Oloplouma’) differ from Lefkara lace linens (‘Lefkaritika’) in their designs, whilst Oloplouma are made entirely out of lace without linen cloth. The lace is included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Cyprus Register, which confirms its traditional significance.
The purpose of the exhibition is to fill the gap in the written account of this tradition; to revitalise the memories of the village during this era, and to introduce the younger generation to this significant piece of the village’s history, which is not widely known.
The artists are: Anastasia Lambaski Onisiforou, Irini Klokkari, Elena Tsigaridou and Sandy Antoniou, Natalie Pehlivani, Christiana Pougerasi, Chrysostomos Iosifides and Chrysostomos Kitas.
Their artistic disciplines vary from jewellery design, fashion and ceramics, to painting, interior and graphic design.
The exhibition is open: Monday – Friday, 8am – 3pm (except public holidays), and with prior notice on weekends.

The Children's Stage of Skala Theater opens the new season with the masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes "Don Quixote" in an adaptation for children by Dimitris Adamis. The story follows the adventures of a hidalgo named Mr. Alonso Quixano who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his sanity and decides to set out to revive chivalry, undo wrongs, and bring justice to the world, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. Donizetti may today be better-known as one of the leading composers of bel canto operas, but he also wrote a number of orchestral works, among which the Sinfonia for Winds in 1817.In one movement, the work is stylistically similar to a bel canto opera overture in its tuneful melodies and dramatic orchestration. German-Swiss composer Joachim Raff meanwhile appears to have himself coined the term “Sinfonietta” for precisely his opus 188 written in the spring of 1873. Describing “little" or "light" symphonies, the work was very popular in its day and no doubt helped the use of the term amongst composers.
Rounding up the programme, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for strings needs little or no introduction. Written in 1880, it’s characterized by the well-known Tchaikovskian colour, with its best-known movement most probably the second one, the Moderato-Tempo di valse. And all these…. WITHOUT A CONDUCTOR!

Lefkosia, the only divided capital in the world, dates back to the Bronze Age. In antiquity and in early Christian times it was known as Ledra. It has been the capital of Cyprus since the Late Byzantine period (11th century). The Lusignans transformed it into a splendid city, with royal palaces and churches. The city centre, the old “Chora”, surrounded by 16th century Venetian Walls, with museums, old churches and medieval buildings, maintains the leisurely atmosphere of yesteryear.

O3 is not just a sport event. Is the hardest sport event in Cyprus. its a challenge of human endurance, strength and self-believe! When you start you will be thinking of a challenge, when you finish you will be thinking, I have no limits! If you want to live something extraordinary you better start training! O3 OlympusMan cannot be compared to other iron distance triathlons. This journey through spectacular Cyprus landscapes is a unique and unforgetable experience! The concept here is pretty simple - you start from sea level in Pafos and finish 1952m above sea level, at Olympus peak, in the Troodos Mountain! Epic, isn’t it? An early morning 1.9k swim at Pafos harbor, followed by an 86km bike section with over a staggering 2,600 meters of ascent. The last leg would be an off-road half marathon with 350 meters of ascent gradually spiraling up to the summit of Olympus at 1952 meters.Sunday, 13th November

He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood.

Milne (of Winnie the Pooh fame) introducing an English-language version in Britain and the United States just two years later. With the story having since been translated into many other languages, including Greek, it tells of a young elephant (Babar) whose mother is killed by a hunter. Babar the Little Elephant was born in 1931 through Jean de Brunhoff’s book Histoire de Babar which enjoyed immediate success, with A. A. Milne (of Winnie the Pooh fame) introducing an English-language version in Britain and the United States just two years later. With the story having since been translated into many other languages, including Greek, it tells of a young elephant (Babar) whose mother is killed by a hunter. Babar escapes, and in the process leaves the jungle, visits a big city and returns to bring the benefits of civilization to his fellow elephants.

The city centre, the old “Chora”, surrounded by 16th century Venetian Walls, with museums, old churches and medieval buildings, maintains the leisurely atmosphere of yesteryear.

Part II
12 Variations on “Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” from W. A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute, op. 66
Sonata for piano and cello No. 3 in A major, op. 69
Sonata for piano and cello No. 4 in C major, op. 102, 1
Sonata for piano and cello No. 5 in D major, op. 102, 2
The composition of sonatas for piano and cello was unthinkable before Beethoven; up until then, the cello would mainly provide the bass line. Moreover, this particular combination posed various difficulties as the piano would often outweigh the low notes of the cello and balance between the two instruments is always precarious. Beethoven was the first composer to tackle these challenges (his example was not followed until 1824). The works for piano and cello (three sets variations and five sonatas) are representative of the three periods of Beethoven’s artistic creation: the 'classical' (WoO 45, 46, opp. 5, 66), the 'heroic' (op. 69) and the 'late' (op. 102). Inspired by the unmatched capabilities of various renowned cellists and his own abilities as a virtuoso pianist, the sonatas not only represented an example par excellence for the subsequent generation of composers, but at the same time, they pose tremendous challenges for cellists and pianists alike.

In his Trout Quintet, Schubert forgoes the usual piano and string quartet lineup, using instead an instrumentation adopted a few years earlier by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Why Trout though? Quite simply, the fourth movement is a set of variations on Schubert's earlier Lied "Die Forelle" (The Trout), and this because the quintet was written for Sylvester Paumgartner, a wealthy music patron and amateur cellist, who wanted the composer to include a set of variations on the specific song. Starting off the programme however is pianist Yiannis Georgiou with Rachmaninov’s “Musical Moment” no. 1, op. 16, which features a mid-piece pause at roughly the same place as Schubert's first “Musical Moment”, emphasizing the influence which the Austrian composer had on the great Russian romantic.S. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood.
